Welcome to the a.k.a.® newsletter for August 2009!
The following new releases are available from the aka web site in both evaluation and upgrade versions:
  • a.k.a.® 2-10-3
  • a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator

a.k.a.® for SQL will be delivered as part of Version 2-11 in September 2009.

The a.k.a.® SharePoint Integrator is currently in the final stages of development and will be coming soon so watch this space!

We have also been busy with further a.k.a.® development to meet our users needs. We are continually looking at ways to improve functionality for our various users in the multiple jurisdictions we all operate in. Version 2-11 and Version 3 are already underway.

The a.k.a.® team continues to grow.
  • Fiona Kearney, an archivist from Ireland, originally joined us for a few months while travelling the world on a working holiday. On her return to Ireland Fiona will be working for Synercon looking after our UK resellers and clients.
  • Ryan Merton joins the a.k.a. team as a senior a.k.a.® sales consultant, bringing significant information architecture and SharePoint experience. Ryan will be based in Canberra.
  • Sanjay Reddy has joined the a.k.a.® development team providing .NET and XML expertise.
However, we also said goodbye to Amanda Harris in June who has moved back to government service as the Director of Records and Information Management at Dept of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. We look forward to a future working with Amanda as she continues to provide leadership using a.k.a.® in innovative new ways.

We too have been constantly travelling since we last wrote in Sep 2008. In that time we have been to Singapore, Malaysia, Hawaii, California, Wisconsin, Nevada, Ottawa, Vancouver and the United Kingdom. Along the way we picked up a number of new friends - both as a.k.a. resellers and new a.k.a. users.

In the next few months we will be at the RMAA Convention in Adelaide (Booth 35) and ARMA Orlando (Booth 303). Then we will be having a well earned break before we head off around the world again next year! We hope to see you at one of these events. For those who can't make it in person there is always the opportunity to communicate and experience a.k.a.® online.

Conni, Eddy and the a.k.a.® team

    a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator Update

The a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator Tools is available for evaluation download from the a.k.a.® website.

The a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator is a tool for a.k.a.® users to develop and maintain their TRIM Classification Plans, Thesauri and Retention Schedules in a.k.a.® and upload regularly into TRIM on a regular basis. The a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator delivers significantly more functionality TRIM?s standard import tools.
    • Compares a.k.a.® and Trim datasets and identifies numbering and relationship anomalies
    • Supports regular updates of term and retention schedule metadata; eliminates tedious manual updating in TRIM
    • Enables deactivation of terms and retention classes no longer in use on import; alleviates the danger of deleting or overwriting live data in your TRIM database
    • Supports bulk deactivation of existing terms and retention schedules
    • Automatically links retention schedules to classification terms; supports inheritance of retention schedules
Why use a.k.a.® instead of TRIM?
    • Faster data entry and term linking
    • Auto numbering of the TRIM Classification Plan
    • Easy linking of the Retention Schedule to the Classification Plan
    • Support rich contextual metadata
    • Maintains links to legislation and stakeholder requirements
    • Protects the integrity of your recordkeeping tools
a.k.a.® and the a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator can be downloaded as evaluation copies from http://www.a-k-a.com.au/downloads/demo.asp(login required). The a.k.a.® TRIM Integrator requires the latest version of a.k.a.®, v 2.10.4: please contact us at support@synercon.com.au if you require any assistance installing this version of a.k.a.®.

Brochures are available at http://www.a-k-a.com.au/aka-TRIM-integrator.pdf and http://www.a-k-a.com.au/aka_brochure.pdf.

    a.k.a.® User Survey Update
Over the past couple of months Fiona Kearney has been conducting a telephone survey of all a.k.a.® users. So far all Australian a.k.a. users have been contacted and New Zealand contacts are currently being contacted!

We would like to thank our users who have taken time out of their busy schedule to respond to the survey.

The response to the survey has been very positive. a.k.a.® users on the whole are very happy with the product and with the developments that have taken place in recent versions. They are also very happy with the support that Synercon provide for a.k.a.®.

The majority of our users find a.k.a.® easy to use, intuitive, records focused, relevant, innovative, useful and a must have product.

One feature of a.k.a. that our users really love is the ability to publish the classification schemes and retention schedules to the web. In many ways this makes the work of records managers visible to users and validates their efforts.

On the subject of user group meetings, we hear that you would like a user group conference covering issues of integration with EDRM systems including SharePoint, building information architectures, selling the RM business case, integrating functional and subject based classification, and leveraging work done in similar organisations.

So the resounding message from the survey is to continue what we are doing and keep on improving!

    a.k.a.® logo change

There has been a change to the a.k.a.® logo. The blue box with the a k a lettering in thumb print and also known written under the logo, has been replaced by red and blue links and a.k.a. written under the links.

The links represent the linking of terms and the classification and disposal schedules in a.k.a.®. The new logo will be on future a.k.a.® products and all advertising material.

The a.k.a.® Reseller community continues to expand throughout the world. In the past few months the following resellers have joined the a.k.a.® team:
